Understanding Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) Response

My response to comedian54's Understanding Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). His Blog.

Thanks for the information comedian54, now I understand ALD. Before seeing it on your blog I have never heard of ALD before on my life. Thanks to you I know that Adrenoleukodystrophy leads to adrenal failure and brain damage. I feel sorry for anyone with this genetic disease because people diagnosed with ALD only live 1-10 years. However, despite your elaboration I failed to understand if this disease only effects boys because you always used the pronoun "boys". Anyways, thanks for the helpful information on ALD. It must be hard to live with seizures, degeneration of visual and auditory function, ataxia, Addison's disease progressive stiffness and neurological abilities. Great job explaining your facts. It's weird that the more rare a disease or disorder is the worse it is. This genetic disease must be really painful, I feel bad that people have to deal with these problems every day, people living with this must really go through a lot.

I am sure comedian gave very good facts, but in answer to your question, the answer is NO. My son passed away from ALD in 2003. Females can be carriers and there have been recent studies to conclude that some carrier females have presented with some of the milder symptoms of the disease around the late 30's. Should you be interested my son has a momorial web site. www.myspace.com/taylorryanoakland
